INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING

Independent Living is:

  • Having opportunities to participate in all aspects of community life

  • Having a choice about where you live, with whom you live and how you want to live

  • Making choices and taking responsibility for your own actions

  • Taking risks and being allowed to fail

  • Controlling and directing your own life

Independent Living Skills Training is:

Training on any specific set of skills needed to achieve independent living, ensuring that people living with disabilities achieve and maintain their independence.  SMCIL assists and support consumers in developing self-determined/self-directed goals to gain greater independence.

Our independent living skills instructions include but are not limited to:

  • Use of community resources

  • Budgeting

  • Travel Training

  • Cooking skills

  • Self-advocacy

  • Household management

  • Communication and social skills

  • Stress management

Community Integration

Community integration means discovering you DO have choices. Too often individuals who have spent years in a nursing home become "institutionalized" and are not aware of the options available to them.

Socialialization Through Recreation

SMCIL supports Socialization through Recreation by actively participating with  and supporting Southern Maryland Community Resources, an agency in Southern Maryland that offers opportunities to meet new people, develop interpersonal skills, gain self-confidence, and most of all to have fun.
